Cenote Angelita has a unique feature that distinguishes it from others around. The famous cloud is at 27 meters. Nothing like the halocline you may see in the other diving spots. These two layers of water are separated by a thick layer of hydrogen sulfate that looks like solid clouds viewed from an airplane.

Outland Cenote

The Outland cenote is part of the world’s second-largest underwater cave system - Sac Actun-Nohoch-Dos Ojos.

Turning toward Outland Cenote into the jungle on the 54th kilometer from Playa del Carmen of the Cancun-Tulum federal road, you will find yourself on a country road. Following, the dusty, bumpy road leads deep into the jungle. It connects the entrances to a multitude of beautiful cenotes. Caracol, Chun Ya, Otoch Ha, Outland, La Concha, Fenomeno, etc.

The entrance is fenced and locked. Outland is a half-collapsed sinkhole with a huge Alamo tree extending its roots like the tentacles of a crawling octopus. The atmosphere of the jungle was overwhelming. Entry to the water was very shallow, over brown rocks. Outside the cave were tall leafy trees, and beautiful “motmot” birds flew by.

Cenote Outland was connected to Sistema Aktun Hu by Alex Alverez, Franco Attolini, and Beto Navo in November 2007. Aktun Hu system was connected to the Nohoch historical section of the connected Sac Actun-Nohoch-Dos Ojos system by Robbie Schmittner on January 30, 2011.

In 2019, Harry Gust began exploring a new cenote called White Dunes. As the exploration continued, Harry connected White Dunes with Cenote Outland. In 2020, Dave Marlow joined Harry, and both continued to explore more passages. Dave and Harry have more than tripled Outland’s original passage length.

Cenote Naharon (Cristal).

When you dive into this cave, you will find yourself in Guillermo del Toro’s film based on Tolien’s story «The Hobbit: or There and Back Again». You will feel like you are going into the depths of the Lonely Mountain to the lair of Smaug, Middle-earth’s last «great» dragon.

The best dives are the main line to Chac’s Room and beyond, which involves one jump. To get to the Deconocido Dome line, swim to the main line, take the first jump to the left of 8 ft (2.4 m), and follow that line 2,100 ft (637 m) upstream to the Double Domes.

The first explorer was Jim Coke in 1985. In 2003, Steve Gerrard and Sergio Granucci added 1400 ft of the line using DPV past Chac’s Room. Other explorers during the late 1980s were Steve Gerrard, Mike Madden, and Parker Turner. Other explorers have pushed the lines beyond what is on the map, but they are unknown.

Kim Ha cenote

On the road to Valladolid from Tulum, several well-known cenotes are available for cave diving. One is Kim Ha Cenote, and the entrance is combined with the road to two more cenotes: Vaca Ha Cenote and Tortuga Cenote.

Kim Ha Cenote is halfway down a dirt road to the Tortuga Cenote. As you drive slowly through the jungle, you’ll spot a road comb where your car goes down the road. Stop your car at the drying mud puddle on the road. Park close to the side to allow space for other diving trucks that may want to go to Tortuga Cenote.

When you’re ready to dive, the cave line begins from the surface tree root at 10 o’clock. It’s crucial to be cautious while entering, as the cave line descends directly down to 20 meters deep through a narrow space filled with mud. Remember, safety should always be your top priority.

There is an underwater connection from Kim Ha Cenote to Tortuga Cenote in the North. The path at the first T to the right will eventually lead you there.

Kim Ha Cenote has a rich history of exploration. The first explorers to venture into its depths were Ivan and Mary Cappelli, Randy Douglas, Sam Ferra, Steve Gerrard, Allen Jonushaitis, Cliff Keck, and Don Redinger. Their pioneering spirit paved the way for further exploration.

Other explorers are Jim Kitka, Daniel Riordan, and R. Weijski-Wol.

The Pedrin Fenomeno Cenote is part of the huge underwater cave system Sac Actun—Dos Ojos—Nohoch Nah Chich.

Turning toward Pedrin Fenomeno Cenote into the jungle on the 54th kilometer from Playa del Carmen of the Cancun-Tulum federal road, you will find yourself on a country road. Following, the dusty, bumpy road leads deep into the jungle. It connects the entrances to a multitude of beautiful cenotes. Caracol, Chun Ya, Otoch Ha, Outland, La Concha, Pedrin Fenomeno, etc.

Cenote Pedrin Fenomeno is part of the connected system Sac Actun-Nohoch-Dos Ojos. Moreover, it is the world’s second-largest underwater cave system, with 376,7 km (234 miles) of underwater lines. The maximum depth is 119.18 mts (391 ft). The Nohoch historical section is an anchialine cave system connecting to naturally intruding marine water and tidal influence in the cenotes. However, this cave system’s coastal discharge point(s) has not yet been explored into the ocean. Despite this, dye tracing to flow towards Caleta Xel-Ha, a nearby coastal bedrock lagoon, demonstrated large volumes of groundwater.

Farther away in the forest, an 8km potholed dirt road leads to the Pedrin Fenomeno Cenote. Pedrin Fenomeno is one more half-collapsed sinkhole. Furthermore, the jungle atmosphere was overwhelming. There is a dilapidated bridge to enter the water. The stairs have collapsed, but you can enter the water on the right or left along the shore. You will come to a shady pond about 2-3 meters (6-10 feet) deep. Outside the cave were tall leafy trees, and beautiful “mot-mot” birds flew by.

At the beginning of January 2007 … Don Ajelo, an ejido member, contacted Alex Álvarez to see if we could explore some cenotes on his land.

The area had been little explored by cavers before since roads did not exist, but a new road had made the cenotes more accessible, although good walks of at least 500 meters were still needed. That doesn’t seem like much when you are carrying only a small backpack, but with two tanks on your back, weighing at least 22 kilograms, it’s a different thing. And we carry more than just two tanks. Fortunately, the property owner had an excellent idea of buying two ATVs and hauling the equipment easily along the narrow, rough road. With that help, we decided to begin a week of diving in one of the cenotes there, which Lucio, an employee of Don Alejo’s, told us is called Aktun Hu. Don Alejo later told us it means Iguana Cave.

During 2008 and 2009, several more diving expeditions extended the system, especially in the northern Fenómeno, by another 12 kilometers, making Aktun Hu the fifth longest cave in Quintana Roo, at 29862 meters.
